How Trade Ideas finds it: by default, 5 Minute Hammer alert appears when there is a traditional hammer pattern on a standard candlestick 5 minute chart. See Trade Ideas plans and pricing to run it live.

What is a hammer candlestick?

A hammer is a single candle with a small body near the top and a long tail underneath, at least twice the size of the body. It shows up after a drop. During that candle sellers pushed the price well down, and buyers pushed it right back.

Key point

Because the close matters so much, Trade Ideas only reports a hammer once the candle has finished. The 5 minute version looks at 5 minute candles.

Parts of a hammer

The downtrend

A hammer only counts after a move lower. The same candle at the top of a rally is called a hanging man.

The long lower wick

Price dropped hard during the candle, then came back. That tail is the whole story of the pattern.

The open and close sit near the high, with little or no upper wick.

How traders use it

Step 1: Let the Trade Ideas alert find it

Turn on the 5 Minute Hammer alert (HMR5). Trade Ideas checks every finished 5 minute candle across the market and flags hammers that come after a downtrend. See it live in the Web Dashboard.

Step 2: Wait for the trigger

Trader tip

Many traders want the next candle to trade above the hammer's high before they treat it as a turn.

Step 3: Entry

Some buy right as the hammer closes. Others buy when the next candle clears its high, which costs a little but filters out more failures.

Step 4: Exit

The low of the hammer's tail is the usual stop. Targets are often a recent swing high or a nearby resistance level. That is a common habit, not advice.

Tips

  • Use a 5 minute chart when you look at a 5 minute alert, or the candle will not match.
  • A hammer near support or the day's low is easier to trust.
  • Very thin stocks print odd candles. Use a volume filter.
  • Longer timeframes are available too, from 2 to 60 minutes.

How the 5 Minute Hammer alert works

This alert reports when there is a traditional hammer pattern on a standard candlestick chart. Because the closing price is so important to a hammer trading pattern, we only report these at the end of the timeframe. The different alerts work on charts of different timeframes.

Trader tip

The last candle in a hammer pattern has no upper wick, a small body, and a large lower wick. This candle must occur in a downtrend. We associate this alert with the color green because most traders see a hammer as a reversal pattern.

Settings

For '5 Minute Hammer' alerts, you have the option to use an alert specific filter. This filter is located immediately to the right of the corresponding alert and is always optional. You can decide to leave it blank if you want to receive more alerts, or you can fill it in to restrict the number of alerts you receive. This filter allows you to specify the quality of the alert. When you set a higher number for this filter, you are telling the alerts server to display only alerts that meet a higher quality standard, resulting in fewer alerts being shown.

When setting an alert for '5 Minute Hammer', the user can filter these alerts by a grade of how on how closely the stock chart matches the ideal shape of the stock pattern. 0 would mean there was no match. 100 would mean its an ideal match.

5 Minute Hammer Description

Key point

The quality value on a scan using the "5 Minute Hammer" represents the grade based on how closely the stock chart matches the ideal shape of the stock pattern. 0% would mean that there was no match at all. Of course, if a stock pattern is this poor a match, then we are unlikely to report an alert. 100% would be an ideal match. Again, this would be an ideal and extreme case. Few if any alerts come close to 100%.

FAQ

Which stocks are forming a hammer candle on the 5 minute chart right now?

Turn on the 5 Minute Hammer alert (HMR5) in Trade Ideas Streaming Alerts. By default, 5 Minute Hammer alert appears when there is a traditional hammer pattern on a standard candlestick 5 minute chart.

What is the 5 Minute Hammer alert?

A hammer is a candle with no upper wick, a small body and a large lower wick that appears in a downtrend; most traders read it as a bullish reversal. This alert checks 5 minute candles.

How do I see fewer, higher-quality 5 Minute Hammer alerts?

Use the optional alert-specific filter immediately to the right of the alert. A higher number tells the alerts server to show only higher-quality alerts, so fewer appear. Leave it blank to see more.

What is the opposite of the 5 Minute Hammer alert?

Most traders read it as a possible bullish reversal after a drop. It is stronger if the next candle confirms it.

What is the difference between a hammer and a hanging man?

They look the same. A hammer comes after a downtrend. A hanging man comes after an uptrend.

Why does the hammer alert wait for the candle to close?

The close decides whether the candle is a hammer at all, so Trade Ideas reports it at the end of the timeframe.

Does a hammer need a green body?

No. The body can be either color. The long lower wick and the small body near the high are what matter.
